The audience was privy to a whopping 10 performances, 3 hip-hop cyphers, which featured KRS-One, Eminem, Black Thought, Mos Def, Wale, GSpan, Nipsey Hussle, Joe Budden, Buck Shot, Crown Royyal, and the only female in the crew Nicki Minaj; and a tribute to women in hip-hop honoring Fatima Robinson, and Missy Elliot for their significant contributions to the hip-hop culture with their art, creativity, originality and pure talent. As I made my way to the venue, my thoughts were hitting me hard. I thought back to the madness that was Raekwon's red carpet and braced myself to be dwarfed by ego-isms and entitlement. Instead, it was a quiet celebration. The production was organized and alive with a hint of special in the air. Everyone involved in oiling this machine was welcoming, warm and helpful. No drama, other than a few on one side belonging to the other. Quiet in that hoopla, which is usually the staple of hip-hop, was absent.

Veteran rapper, Ice Cube received the “I AM HIP HOP” Icon Award which is presented to an individual who, during their lifetime, has made notable contributions of outstanding significance to the hip-hop community.
This year “Hip Hop Cares” spotlighted 50 Cents’ G-Unity Foundation, Busta Rhymes’ affiliation with RockCorps, Jim Jones service to Entertainers Alliance for Education Foundation and Young Jeezy’s Street Dreams Foundation.

After coming through the metal detectors, I was escorted to my position. There was a feeling of immense pride within me. A buzz of anticipation without. I was also overwhelmed by a sea of red. It twas as if we were about to race and all the cars were at the ready.

The emcee excited the stars and kept the energy high. Ice Cube flashed us with his steely westside grin while Frankie used her microphone to tickle the celebs with her persona; "Man Down!".
