Dubed The Contender

TrioEntNot long ago I had the great opportunity to meet and Interview Stack House Recording Artist Flawless. He was very humble and patient through the interview though I had some technical difficulties with my recorder. He remained a good sport.

If you're new to his name, here's some background. He is a Hip Hop artist with a huge voice. He started in the year 2000, and now stands out on over 100 mix tapes. His first CD “FLAWLESS”, broke the BEATSTREET record for most sold in a single day by an underground artist. Radio personality  Angie Martinez, singer Cheri Dennis and actor Jamie Hector, to name a few , has labeled him a contender.

Flawless has toured the country with the best in Hip Hop such as the Young Bloods, Manio, Jim Jones, Busta Rhymes and the Flip Mode Squad to name a few. He has also worked with the likes of Trey Songz and Chingy.

He has aslo appeared on BET's 106 and Park, and since ,there has not a been a DJ that passes the opportunity to rock a Flawless joint at any party or club around the country. He is also a part of the 50 Mics Independent Artist Network. His current single "That's My Baby" has been getting much air play and it received the most hits and downloads in Myspace music history.

Flawless has proven to be no stranger to the Hip Hop game. His lyrical content is raw and edgy and takes you on a journey through his own life experiences. Flawless freestyles with passion and sensitivity to the art of Hip Hop. Its obvious that Flawless owns his craft.

Flawless let us start at the beginning. What motivated you to want to get into the music biz?

"I was a fan of music ever since I was a young kid coming up".

Who are some of the Hip Hop artists that inspired you to do music?

"Well I listened to a lot of cats like Biggie, Jay-Z, M.O.P., Li’ Wayne. Cats like that".

How did you get started?

"One day I was listening to some cats on the corner free styling. I thought to myself I can do that. A few weeks went by and I saw the same cats spitting lyrics, hard. I took a chance and joined in with them. 'Not minding my own business' I like to call it. To my surprise, look what happened. The rest is history".

The public was exposed to your sound in the year of 2000 with "Flawless". Your single sold the most for an underground rap artist. Your current single “That’s My Baby” is the hottest song right now . How does it feel to generate all this attention?

"I knew it was going to come. When you put your heart and soul into what you love it has to. Though, I feel like I should be further along. Sometimes you have to work a little harder to get where you want to go. I’m working hard to get there. I have a place I want to go and I won’t stop ‘til I get there. It’s rough sometimes between my life and the music industry. But you know that’s how it goes".

Has there been a change in the way people receive you; from the beginning to the point of where you are now?

"To me there really is no difference. I’m still the same. The response I get from my fans are still the same. Most of my fans know me from the mixtapes and the DVD’s. My fans can feel my vibe, my aura from my music, you feel me. I’m the same dude. I try my best to stay humble. I don’t get a big head even though right now I’m getting all this attention and its only the beginning. I know that it can all be taken away within minutes. I enjoy my success so far but I don’t let it get the best of me. Some cats I come across, you hear them and you think there a certain way. When you approach them you quickly learn they are not what they portray themselves to be. When my fans see me where ever I am, I stop to talk to them. I’m just a regular dude. I’m no different from the next person".

Flawless, you mention that you try your best to remain humble. Is remaining humble in this industry a personal goal you fight to maintain?

"Naw. I would’t call it a personal goal I fight to maintain, that’s just how I am".

What are some of the things you do to remain humble?

"It’s simple; my past. I feel as an individual you can’t forget where you come from. When you do, you're just living day by day with no purpose. I remember my past struggles, failures, mistakes, disappointments. I learned from all of them, and it made me into the man I am today".

Flawless

Would you mind sharing some of your past experiences with your audience so they can get a better sense of who Flawless really is?

"It was not that easy. I have been on my own since the age of sixteen. I know the streets and I struggled hard. I had to learn how to handle my own business. I came from the bottom up like most cats out there. I see the success you know, but like I said, I don’t let it get to me. If anything, I feel like I deserve it. I have been through much hardship in my life and It’s my time. You feel me"?

So what is it like rising above your competition?

Ha ha (Flawless laughs) "its easy just like the elevator. You get in, press the button, and your moving to the top. There is nothing to block you from moving to the top unless you press the emergency stop button".

What were some of your thoughts when you got started in the industry?

"I had many thoughts, but it was my nerves that got to me the most" (Flawless laughs again).

Has being in the industry changed your opinion of it from the time you first started out up to this point?

"Yes. A few of my thoughts have changed, especially when you know you should have been out there before some of these cats that are out already. This changed the way I think of the game. To be honest, it opened my eyes to how this industry really works. Some cats get it instantly and loose it just as fast. There are some others in the game that it took five to ten, even twenty years for them to get to where they want to be. They will be in the industry for the rest of there lives. I don't mind if it takes ten to twenty years, I 'm looking for longevity in this industry. I plan to be here a while".

Has being in the industry made you question if you really want to do this?

"In some ways yes it has. It's a process that can be very long. I learned that you have to have patience. Sometimes I wanted to give it up because of the struggle. But, I remember where I came from and where I want to go. That's what keeps me moving".

With all the buzz your getting, do you find it hard balancing your personal life with your career?

"Its kinda hard with two kids. I try to balance a consistent schedule for them. My kids come first above all. Then I handle my own business with the music. I try my best to make sure all of their needs are met. After that, I can focus on the music".

Tell me what was it like working with Trey Songz?

"It was great. Trey is tough. I was dealing with him around '04 and '05. That was the time when his first album came out. I feel that he didn't get the respect he was suppose to get. He's getting it now. He deserves it all".

Name some of the artist and producers that you've worked with in your career?

"Recently I worked on some material with Jules Santana, E. Dove. I did shows with Manio and Rick Ross. I've done shows out of town in Ohio with Chingy, and so many others. I've done shows everywhere just about, from New York, Ohio, to Miami. You name it, I've been there. I've worked with the best".

Tell me Where does Flawless see himself in the future? Are you working on another project right now?

"Yes. I just dropped a new mixtape called "NY News 1". The mixtape has been released on Stack House Ent. In the second quarter of 2010 I will start working on a new project called "The Great Marathon". I'm looking forward to getting that out".

What advice would you give to someone who's trying to get into the music industry?

"Just work hard. Its not going to come tomorrow. If it comes Thursday, you start it Tuesday, but you just might loose it by Friday. It's best that you take your time and let it work out. I must say, if you know you don't belong here (he laughs) then its best you relax and buy some albums. Look, just be a fan (he Laughs again), its okay. Everyone wants to rap now-a-days but somebody has to be a fan. It's funny, you hand a cat your CD, they're giving one back to you of them. There aren't fans no more. I don't get it. You have to work for it. Pay dues".

What can we expect from Flawless in the Future?

"A new album The Great Marathon on Stack House Ent. I'm gonna keep on banging more hits for my fans. We have three other artists on Stack House Ent. We have Joon Summaz, he's coming out in the second quarter. We have Grimey and I.N.F., he sings. He has a type of Hip Hop and R & B flow. Its sorta like Trey Songz. We're trying to cook them all up and make a nice blend".

Does this sound like a record label for you in the future?

(He laughs) "Never thought of it but sounds like a good idea". There you have the exclusive, Flawless plans to start a Label in the future, (Flawless Laughs again).

Is there anyone that you want to work with on any upcoming projects?

"Its anyone that wants to do real music. That's who I want to work with".

I want to go a little deeper into the music industry for a second. Music seems to become more commercial more computerized. How do you view the Music industry? How do you maintain that raw authentic old school Hip Hop sound?

"You have to remember where you come from. Its like the same thing as I said I earlier. I never stopped listening to my 2003 and 2004 Cd's when it was hard to get into the studio. I even listen to the old mixtapes I did on the radio. I use to just plug the mic in press record and let it rip. If I messed up I had to do it all over again. There was no punch in, no pitch controls, no pro tools. Basically, what I'm saying, no computer. It was all radio. I remember recording a whole tape all free styling from front to back. A side and B side. When I messed up I had to do it all over again".

Do you still record like that, to this day?

"Naw you can't do that anymore( Flawless Laughs). I should try it sometime again. That will keep the spark in you!"

We covered quit a bit. Is there anything that you would like to share about who Flawless really is that the Fans don't know?

"That's not hard to do. If you don't know me by now you can find me on Myspace. Or, you can buy the mixtape on the streets, its out here now. You can also find me at battiff.com. You can look up Flawless Stack House music that will come up . Also you can download the music for free from that site. We have the Myspace.com/fls550, leave me a message. There are things you can download and check out my pics. I'm on twitter as well you can follow me. The address is twitter@Flawless550. I'm also on youtube where you can view my videos.

I expect nothing but great things in the future from Flawless. He's latest mixtape "NY News 1" proves that he has earned the right to own the name Contender. Wiith the attention he has received thus far, I don't think he will stay an underground artist for very long. It is only a matter of time before the rest of the world will know his name and fall into his music.
